What is the difference between granite and quartz?

This is a question we frequently hear from our clients and visitors. The short answer is that both granite and quartz surfacing are solid, durable, and strong – making them ideal for countertops for everyday use.

Quartz Surfacing

Quartz countertops are made up of 93% quartz and 7% acrylic binder, which classifies it as a synthetic product. We offer several quartz product brands, including Cambria, Silestone, Viatera, Zodiaq, and CaesarStone. The difference between these brands is mainly their respective color palettes. When you are looking for quartz, it feels and looks like granite, but being a composite material, it has a more consistent look across the entire slab. Quartz does not need sealing and typically comes with a factory warranty (usually 10 years).

Granite

Granite is a natural stone. It has natural color variations from one piece to another. There are over 400 colors to choose from. Some have grain patterns, and others have more movement. If you are looking for something more customized, more one-of-a-kind, then granite is your best choice! Each slab comes from Mother Earth and is unique, meaning you have a wide selection of colors and patterns to choose from! We recommend sealing your countertops about once a year, depending on your color choice. We seal granite before leaving with a water-based sealer. It’s very easy to apply, which means you don’t need to hire someone to seal your countertop; it’s just a wipe-on / wipe-off product (very easy).

When you choose Distinctive Countertops & Cabinetry, we go over each slab with you to ensure you know how your kitchen will look before fabrication begins. We consider grain patterns and ensure that we never put grain flows against each other! Such attention to detail ensures that you will have a countertop that looks and functions beautifully for years to come.
