You’re in the process of thinking about renovating your kitchen and you’re hesitating between a granite countertop or a quartz countertop… Which one to choose? And why?
Quartz and granite are two materials that are often chosen for kitchen countertops or worktops. These two materials have advantages but also some disadvantages… Let’s compare their durability, ease of maintenance…
What are the differences to consider when choosing a granite countertop or a quartz countertop?
First of all, it should be noted that quartz used for kitchen worktops or countertops is not 100% natural mineral. It is actually a reconstituted stone with added resin, so your countertop is only about 90% natural stone (this is also the case for quartz used in a bathroom). Thanks to this addition of resin, quartz can come in all colors by simply adding pigments. This is a great advantage for finding a quartz that perfectly matches your color preferences, something Mother Nature unfortunately can’t do as quickly!
If you choose a granite countertop, it will be 100% natural stone, but you will have to choose from the colors offered by nature… However, be aware that, as they say, nature does it well, and there are no less than a hundred shades available for your granite countertop!
In terms of resistance, granite and quartz are almost equal when it comes to impact, stains, or scratches, although quartz is a little less heat-resistant…
Granite, given its origin in magma, is very heat-resistant, but will be slightly less resistant to grease or oil stains.
And lastly, let’s talk about the more practical aspect: price! Quartz is a bit more expensive, but since there are different qualities of quartz, you’ll definitely find a quartz that you like and that fits your budget.
Yes, I know, this article hasn’t helped much. The advantages and disadvantages of quartz and granite don’t allow for a clear decision since both materials have similar qualities… It all comes down to which one you like more aesthetically!
