Granite, quartz, and marble are the most popular materials used for countertops. Each of these materials has equally interesting characteristics not only in terms of beauty and performance, but also when it comes to maintenance and repair once damaged.
Granite and marble are natural stones that are much more heat-resistant than quartz. On the other hand, quartz is completely non-porous, does not need to be sealed, and requires less maintenance compared to granite and marble.
You can perform a simple test to check if your granite or marble countertop needs sealing by pouring a small amount of water onto the surface. If the water is absorbed within 10 minutes, your countertop needs to be sealed. This process is generally simple and only takes about 20 minutes of your time, using a suitable sealing product at least once a year.
These three materials are generally very hard and resistant to scratches, but the impact of a heavy object can cause scratches, cracks, or even chipping. Fortunately, in most cases, you can repair your countertop yourself.
For scratches, small chips, and cracks, you can use a color-matched repair pen or epoxy adhesive in a matching color. Make sure to clean the damaged area thoroughly and carefully fill it with adhesive using a brush. Protect the surrounding area by applying tape around the repair zone. Once the adhesive has hardened, try polishing the repaired surface using a razor blade to remove any excess product.
For major cracks or chips, it is best to seek professional help to repair the damage.
