What exactly is ceramics?
Ceramics comes from the Greek term “keramos,” meaning “potter’s clay.” However, many modern ceramic formulations do not contain clay. Metallic and non-metallic compounds are the building blocks of modern ceramics. The atomic bonds between them are typically ionic. Nuclear reactors use uranium oxide ceramics as fuel. Silicon nitride is used to make cutting tools. Aircraft engine parts are made from carbide-based refractories.
